Villanueva Sets School Record at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON -- A Houston school record fell during the second day of the Houston Invitational as junior Amanda Villanueva won the weight throw with a throw of 18.29m (60-1/4 feet). Her finish beat a previous Houston best of 18.03m (59-02.00) set in 2004 by Shayla Bowman.
Junior Seun Adigun set a season best time in the 60-meter hurdles after finishing second with a time of 8.38. The Chicago, Ill., native's time currently ranks as the fastest time in Conference USA. It also beat her previous provisional qualifying time of 8.43 set at the Leonard Hilton Memorial on Jan. 19 and ranks at the 16th fastest time in the nation.
Senior Carey LaCour also advanced to the 60 meter finals and finished fifth with a time of 6.78. That time currently ranks as the fastest time in C-USA. Senior Ebonie Floyd won her third 60 meter race this year with a time of 7.31. Senior Octavia Garrett also advanced to the finals and finished eighth (7.65).
After leading in the heptathlon at the end of the day on Friday, junior Jarrett Flax finished sixth after competing in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meter run. Leading the way for Cougars was senior Nick Garza with 4,935 points to take second place. Also placing was sophomore Morgan Floyd (fifth), freshman Wesley Bray (seventh) and sophomore Neal McCarty (12th).
Junior Kolee Latson set a new personal season best in the 200 meters after finishing seventh with a time of 22.18. Also finishing for Houston were freshmen Pearson Crichlow (13th) and Justin Davis (24th). Finishing in 15th in the 200 meters was freshman Quin'shundolyn McPherson to take the top spot for the Cougars.
Freshman Jason Perez finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.64 and senior Chris White finished 12th. On the women's side, freshman Ciara Willis finished 10th with a time of 58.40.
In the distance races, sophomore Kelcee Keenan finished 22nd in the mile and freshman Erica Hannemann finished 39th. Freshman Daniel Martinez finished 19th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.30 and in the women's race sophomore Jennifer Harper finished 10th with a time of 2:19.76.
Finishing eighth in the 3,000 meters was senior Calum Neff to take the top spot for UH with a time of 8:29.01. Also placing was freshman Ahmed Harb (10th). For the women, junior Oumama Hallal finished 16th and freshman Jessica Cook finished 17th.
In relay action, the women's 4x400 relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:48.78 and the men's 4x400 relay team finished fourth (3:20.69).
Finishing third and fourth in the high jump was junior Ivan Diggs and senior Tristian Whitley. Diggs finished the day clearing 2.12 m (6-11.50) and Whitley cleared 2.07m (6-09.50). Sophomore Grant Hightower finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 7.15m (23-05.50). In the shot put, senior James Lee finished seventh with a throw of 16.54m (54-03.25) and senior Lucas Mireles finished 11th (15.70m/51-06.25).
