Softball's Shamblin Earns Conference USA Pitcher of the Week

HOUSTON - Angel Shamblin was honored with Conference Pitcher of the Week accolades for the sixth time in her career Monday afternoon as announced by the league office. It's the second consecutive season that Shamblin has started the year with the league's Pitcher of the Week award.
The recently named Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year lived up to the hype, compiling a 3-1 record and a stifling 0.39 ERA as the Cougars opened the season last weekend at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational. The Florida native held opponents to a .194 average and notched 22 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.
In her only start of the weekend, Shamblin registered 14 strikeouts and a complete game against Ole Miss. The 14 Ks was a Houston record for a seven-inning game.
Shamblin followed that outing with three quality appearances from the bullpen. Her only setback of the weekend came against No. 11 Michigan in international tiebreaker competition.
She fired 4.1 shutout innings of relief against Ole Miss and retired the last 12 batters she faced in a 2-1 victory against the Rebels.
Shamblin saved her best effort of the weekend for last, earning another victory from the bullpen against No. 11 Michigan. She entered the game with runners on the corners and one out in the fourth inning. She proceeded to get Teddi Ewing to fly out and Rebekah Milian to ground out to protect the 2-1 advantage.
The Wolverines threatened again in the seventh inning, opening the frame with back-to-back singles. Shamblin dug deep, getting a foul out and fly out before facing ASA/USA Softball Player of the Year candidate Samantha Findlay. The Florida native jumped ahead 1-2 and used a curveball that caught Findlay looking to end the game.
The win over Michigan tied Shamblin with Crystal Briscoe (2003-06) with 30 career wins for the No. 3 spot in program history. Shamblin enters next weekend's action 13 strikeouts away from 300 for her career.
Houston returns to action, welcoming six teams to the Cougar Softball Stadium and playing host to the Crowne Plaza Classic this weekend. The Cougars square off against four NCAA Tournament teams from last season in No. 9 LSU, Southern Illinois, Indiana and Missouri State in addition to Texas State and Centenary.
