HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 60 Florida State Sunday afternoon at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
The Cougars (6-2) had their 22-match home winning streak snapped. Both losses this season have come against FILA Collegiate Top 75 programs.
"All streaks have to come to an end sometime," head coach John Severance said. "We're doing something right if we can go on a run of 22 straight at home. It was special for our program to put together an undefeated season at home a year ago."
The two teams decided not to play doubles with rain in the forecast. FSU started strong, winning four singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match.
"Florida State is a quality program and an NCAA Tournament bound team," Severance said. "We competed hard in each match. There wasn't a match that we weren't in. We gave them a good run and just came up a little short."
Two matches came down to three sets. Vicky Simpson lost a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 decision, but Leila Salek stormed back from a 6-2 opening set to defeat to Nicola Slater, who knocked off No. 20 Darya Ivanov of Georgia just a week ago. The United Kingdom native fired back with a hard-fought 7-5 second set win and notched a 7-6 victory in the third set, which included a 7-5 tiebreaker score.
Houston returns to the courts Friday at 1:30pm against Prairie View A&M. Admission is free to Hoff Courts.
