Memphis, TENN. -- The University of Houston volleyball team lost their second straight match this weekend, falling in four games to the Memphis Tigers. The Cougars lost in four games with scores of 27-30, 23-30, 30-25 and 26-30.
Houston (11-10, 6-4 C-USA) lost their second straight after starting the weekend on a three-game win streak and fell to 2-4 on the road in conference action. The Cougars were led by junior Justine Farmer's 18 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Hannah Sullivan added 13 kills and 7 digs.
UH battled from behind in games one and two but it wasn't enough as they fell behind early 0-2. But after dropping the first two games of the match Houston looked to start to even the score. They would do so behind the impressive play of Farmer and Sullivan. Farmer recorded nine of her 18 kills in the win while Sullivan added six of her 13 kills to lead the Cougars.
Down just one game, Houston hoped to force a game five in their third straight match. Houston fell behind, 9-14 and dug out of the whole to get within one, 23-24 before Memphis went on a 4-1 to stretch their lead again. It wouldn't be enough as the Cougars fell 26-30.
Memphis was led by Sarah Bury. Bury recorded 19 kills and 12 digs to lead the Tigers.
The Cougars return home for two matches next weekend. They open the weekend on Oct. 26 with a 7pm match against ECU and end the weekend with a 1pm match against Marshall.
