HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team fell in five games to UAB Friday night in Birmingham, Ala., to open their weekend road trip. The Cougars lost in five games with scores of 30-23, 26-30, 34-32, 22-30 and 12-15.
Houston (11-9, 6-3 C-USA) snapped a three-game win streak with the loss and fell to 2-3 on the road in conference action.
The Cougars were led by juniors Justine Farmer and Kelsey King and freshman Hannah Sullivan. Each recorded a double-double in the loss.
Farmer notched 34 kills and 11 digs. Her 92 hitting attempts were her second highest total this season, trailing only her school record 99 attempts set on Sept. 6 against Texas-San Antonio.
King added 36 assists and 12 digs while Sullivan had 14 kills and 21 digs.
After taking an 11 point lead, 21-10, in game one, Houston was able to hold on to take a 1-0 lead in the match. UAB battled back, however, in game two to even the score.
Neither team wanted their opponent to take a lead in the match as game three was taken to extra points. Houston trailed 28-23 and it looked as though UAB would get the win but Houston went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 29-28. It would take two Sullivan kills to give the Cougars the win.
The 34 points Houston scored in the win were its highest this season. The last time Houston scored 34 points was in a game four loss to Rice on Nov. 2, 2005.
The Cougars had a chance to win game four to end the match but the Blazers dominated the match winning easily to force a fifth game.
In game five, Houston took an 8-5 lead but UAB responded with a 6-0 run putting them ahead for good. The Blazers would go to earn the 15-12 win.
Houston had played just five matches prior to tonight this season that were decided in the fifth game. With the loss they fell to 4-2 in five-game matches.
The Blazers were led by Ivana Bozic who had 24 kills and 25 digs.
The Cougars will travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday for a 1pm match against the Memphis Tigers. For a complete recap of the match log on to www.UHCougars.com following the day's competition.
