HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team held their final workout this week in jerseys and helmets on the UH Practice Field on Thursday in preparation for their match-up with the UAB Blazers on Saturday.
The Cougars are coming off a thrilling 56-48 victory over cross-town rival Rice on Oct. 13. Head coach Art Briles said last week a win for the team would do wonders for the Cougars. When asked how it had carried over to practice this week he said it had helped with their belief in themselves.
"It has helped with the belief of the team. We did finish and win when we just hadn't been on the right side of the scoreboard to win. Now, we are sitting atop the conference race and we have a chance to stay up there. That's a big deal for us," Briles said.
With the final preparations for Saturday's game over, Briles said the team looked prepared and focused to face the Blazers.
"We had a good workout. It was pretty crisp. There was good energy and focus and now all we have to do is go out there and perform. We are in good shape mentally and physically and now we just have to go perform," Briles said.
Friday usually includes team travel for an away game but Houston will not make the trip to Birmingham until Saturday so the plan for tomorrow is to carry out the home game routine.
"What we are going to do is work it like a regular home game. We are going to go with our regular home game routine and get up Saturday, eat, have team meetings and get to Birmingham," Briles said.
The Cougars face UAB at 6 p.m., Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.. Fans can hear the game live on 740 AM KTRH with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sideline. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
Fans and media members should note that Saturday's game will air on 740 AM KTRH and not 790 AM The Sports Animal.
