Houston Opens 2007 With Arch Rival Rice ...
After playing four games in six days, the University of Houston women's basketball squad has had an 11-day layoff to prepare for its return to Conference USA play on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. CST in Hofheinz Pavilion against arch-rival Rice.
UH was supposed to travel to Colorado on Dec. 30, but did not do so due to weather in the Denver area. No makeup has been announced.
The two squads will play twice in the less than three weeks with a nationally-televised return game at Autry Court on Jan. 21. Houston took two of three from the Owls last season and own a 38-6 all-time series lead.
UH finished with a losing record out of Conference USA play for the second-straight year, only the second time in program history that has happened.
Houston has lost two of three but have earned its only three wins of the year in the last five games. UH's seven-day holiday layoff is the teams' second-longest of the season, with only a nine-day layoff (Jan. 11-20) between the ECU and Rice games longer.
Rice enters with a 7-6 record, losers of three in-a-row. The Owls are 2-3 on the road this season and their last win at Hofheinz Pavilion was on Jan. 10, 1995.
The Cougars will more than likely stick to the starting five of the past two games, Alona Obaze (5-5/G), Tye Jackson (5-10/G), Whitney James (5-11/F), Sunshine Misa-Uli (5-11/F) and Ryan Bradley (6-2/C).
Rice will likely counter with Kadie Riverin (5-9/G), Samantha Stovall (6-0/F), Valeria Berezhynska (6-4/C), Emery Carter (6-1/F) and Krystal Frazier (5-8/G).
