BEAUMONT - The University of Houston softball team completed a 2-0-1 weekend at the Lone Star College Classic last weekend. Rain and lightning not only caused delays in Saturday's action but cancelled Sunday's play.
"I was pleased with how our team handled the conditions and delays," head coach Kyla Holas said. "Our defense was solid. The minor mistakes we made were due to weather but those are things that will get better in practice."
The Cougars opened the tournament with Navarro Junior College. The game ended in a 0-0 tie after four innings due to lighting. Barbie Love pitched four strong innings, giving up only a hit batter to go along with four strikeouts. Katie Bush led the offense with two hits.
Houston knocked off Stephen F. Austin 5-2 in the squad's lone seven-inning game of the weekend. Samantha Cummings provided a three-run home run in her first career at-bat as a Cougar. That was more than enough offense for Angel Shamblin, who fired five innings of one-hit ball and sprinkled in seven strikeouts. Candi Kloecker picked up the save, throwing two innings and notching a strikeout.
"Our pitching was the highlight of the weekend," head coach Kyla Holas said. "The staff met all of the expectations and challenges that were set for them during the weekend."
The Cougars concluded Saturday's action with a 6-5 victory over St. Mary's in six innings. Elaina Nordstrom cranked a solo home run, while Carla Kennimer was touched up for only one hit in five innings of work. The southpaw also recorded five strikeouts.
Houston returns to the diamond next weekend at the Spring Klein College Classic. The Cougars square off against Texas, Baylor and Louisiana-Lafayette, three Top 20 programs from a season ago. Houston also faces New Mexico State and Blinn College.
"We'll use the next week of practice to get more reps and work on our contact points on offense," Holas said. "Instead of waiting until the fourth inning and the second time around against a pitcher, we'll work on making little adjustments that will allow our hitting to come around earlier."
