HOUSTON - Sunshine Misa-Uli registered career-highs, slapping 23 kills and 18 digs as the University of the Houston volleyball team defeated McNeese State (30-25, 24-30, 30-24, 30-22) Saturday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center in the final match of the Conference USA/Southland Conference Challenge.
The Cougars (9-6) registered an undefeated mark to win the tournament and only dropped one game along the way. The victory also was No. 800 for the program in its 35-year history.
Justine Farmer tacked on 22 kills and 27 digs, while Becca Sartori powered home 12 kills on a .276 attack percentage. With 12 kills, Sartori moved into the Top 10 in program history. The Houston native now has 1,147 career kills and is 11 kills away from Nashika Stokes (1993-96) for the No. 9 position.
Krystal Schulle passed out a career-best 61 assists to go along with 11 digs. She has registered a double-double in three of her first four matches at setter.
Ashley Calhoun reeled in 16 digs, while Millicent Martin corralled 12 digs on the back row. Calhoun has sprawled out for double-digit digs in nine of her 13 starts at libero this season.
Houston controlled the tempo early and jumped out to a 10-4 lead. McNeese State cut the lead down to three points on three separate occasions, but the Cougars responded to take a 30-25 win. Misa-Uli paced Houston with seven kills on a .455 attack percentage.
McNeese regrouped and fired out to an 18-5 advantage in game two. The Cougars charged back and got within 25-19 before the Cowgirls picked up a pair of blocks to hold on for the 30-24 win.
Game three was a knick and tuck affair. At 19-19, the Houston defense forced a pair of McNeese State attack coupled with a Farmer kill. The Cougars rode that initial momentum to grab a 30-24 victory.
Houston saved its best effort for last, powering home 23 kills on a game-high .346 attack percentage in the fourth game. With the Cougars ahead 9-7, Houston went on an 11-6 spurt capped by a Misa-Uli kill. Houston finished the match with a 30-22 win.
