HOUSTON - Justine Farmer recorded her ninth double-double of the season, smacking 18 kills on a career-best .471 attack percentage, to go along with 10 digs as the University of Houston volleyball team swarmed past McNeese State (31-29, 30-26, 30-19) Friday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center in the Conference USA/Southland Conference Volleyball Challenge.
"It was big for us to come out and take care of business in three games," Farmer said. "We wanted to cut down on our service errors and we did that. However, we still know that we have to work harder and continue to improve."
Krystal Schulle dished out a career-best 46 assists as the Houston offense attacked at a .376 percentage for the match. The Cougars (7-6) closed the match out in style, connecting at a .548 mark.
"Krystal did another great job setting a balanced attack," head coach Bill Walton said. "The only thing our hitters need to do is go with the flow and let Krystal have fun out there. Our hitters can't expect a perfect set from her all the time. That will come in time as we keep practicing."
Kelly McAnelly tacked on 10 kills and moved passed Julie Gates (1986-89) for the No. 5 spot in program history. The Houston native now has 1,229 career kills and is 107 kills away from Emily Leffers (1993-94, 96-97) for the No. 4 hole.
Sunshine Misa-Uli added a career-high 14 kills and 14 digs. She also added a team-best three aces. Becca Sartori chipped in with eight kills, while Erin Rice smacked five kills and four blocks. Ashley Calhoun reeled in 11 digs for the victors.
"Sunshine is an awesome all-around player," Farmer said. "It's amazing how she can go from the middle to the outside in just one week."
Houston grabbed an early 16-9 advantage on game one, but McNeese State (1-7) charged back to catch the Cougars at 25-25. After trading sideouts, Houston forced an attack error to regain a 30-29 lead. Farmer ripped a cross-court kill giving the Cougars a 31-29 victory.
The Cougars once again controlled the temp to start the second game. Houston got another five kills from Farmer to build a 19-15 advantage. The Cowgirls trimmed the deficit down to one on two separate occasions, but Houston responded with a pair of Misa-Uli kills to secure a 30-26 win.
"We know we have one more big match tonight," Farmer said. "We're going to spend the afternoon watching film on Texas State. It's going to be a battle, but we'll be ready to go."
The Cougars take on Texas State later tonight at the Athletics/Alumni Center to continue the Conference USA/Southland Conference Volleyball Challenge. First serve against the Bobcats is slated for 8pm.
