HOUSTON - With temperatures hovering in the mid-90s and a heat index in triple digits on Thursday, the University of Houston football team moved indoors to the friendly confines of the Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Working out in shorts and shoulder pads, the Cougars practiced for about two hours inside the Athletics/Alumni Center. Following the workout, head coach Art Briles said the Cougar players responded well to the change in practice environment and seemed prepared entering Friday's scrimmage.
"It was a good break to get out of the heat," said Briles, who enters his fourth season in 2006. "We will rest them Friday morning, get a good lift and then have a scrimmage in the evening. We're starting to get into game-like weeks, and that's a good feeling."
With many upperclassmen working in their fourth training camp under Briles and his assistant coaches, the 2006 Cougar training camp has become a model of organization and efficiency.
"We have developed a little bit of a routine. Everyone understands what is expected and how to get where we want to," Briles said. "There is not as much teaching going on as there is fine-tuning. That is probably the most important thing."
The Cougars open their 2006 season at 8 p.m., Sept. 2 against Conference USA rival Rice in a game to be nationally televised on CSTV. With more than two weeks before that showdown against the Owls, the Cougars will continue to work on the fundamentals in practice for the rest of this week before turning their attention to Rice.
"We will start gearing up for that next week," Briles said. "Right now, we are still working on ourselves."
Training camp will end this weekend with the first day of school slated for Monday. The Cougars will move into its normal weekly routine of practicing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Mondays off.
