WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND - Former University of Houston tennis standout Sarah Borwell dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to No. 19 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Montenegro in the second round of Wimbledon Thursday afternoon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
This was a career best finish for Borwell in a grand slam event after losing in the first round of Wimbledon in 2005. After splitting the first two sets of her match yesterday with Marta Domachowska of Poland, Borwell battled through a tight final set, getting a crucial hold at 4-4. She clinched the match and her first career grand slam victory, breaking Domachowska's serve.
Borwell was the 2002 Conference USA Player of the Year and was ranked in the Top 15 nationally throughout her senior season with the Cougars. She also earned C-USA All-Decade honors in 2005.
The Middlesborough, England native remains alive in the main doubles draw, paired with fellow countrywoman Jane O'Donoghue. Their opening round match with Mervana Jugic-Salkic and Emma Laine is scheduled for Friday afternoon
