HOUSTON, Texas - In his final spring practice for the Cougars, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb passed for 162 yards and one touchdown as the University of Houston concluded its spring drills with the annual Red-White game Saturday afternoon at the Carl Lewis International Track and Field Complex.
Kolb completed 10-of-13 passes and hooked up with senior running back Jackie Battle on a 17-yard screen pass. Battle also looked sharp in his final spring performance, rushing for two touchdowns and 36 yards on seven carries.
Under the direction of new defensive coordinator Alan Weddell, the Cougar defense continued its improvement, registering seven sacks and an interception by senior free safety Will Gulley. Redshirt freshman Brandon Brinkley led all defenders with eight total tackles.
"This is what we wanted to do, and that is come in here and bounce around a little bit and have a little flare to us," said UH head coach Art Briles, "and get out of it healthy and that is what we did. We were really pleased with the crowd that turned out today on a Saturday morning in mid April.
"I've never claimed to be really smart, but I feel really good about next fall. The guys are very dedicated and are doing a great job. We're going to be a tough team to beat. I can promise you that."
Junior Anthony Alridge electrified the crowd with his 61-yard touchdown scamper and was hardly touched along the way. Alridge led all rushers with 78 yards on just two carries. Sophomore walk on Justin Brewster racked up 49 yards and one score on a team-high 11 carries.
The final score on the day was a 15-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Joseph to junior wide receiver Jeron Harvey. Joseph finished with 50 yards passing, while Harvey registered 56 yards receiving on two receptions.
Now, the Cougars will concentrate on academics as the spring semester comes to a close next month. Houston will report to fall camp in early August and will kickoff the 2006 season in the annual Bayou Bucket clash at Rice on September 2. The Cougars' seven-game home schedule begins on September 9, when UH plays host to Tulane in a Conference USA tilt.
