Houston - University of Houston head basketball coach Tom Penders announced that Charlie Jones, III, a 6-0 point guard from Blinn College has signed to play for the Cougars in 2006-07.
"Charlie is a pure point guard who knows how to run a team," Penders said. "He can push the ball up the floor without turning over the ball, and can hit the open jump shot. He also is an excellent defensive player who should fit right in with the other players we have on our team.
"He gives us a replacement for Brian Latham on the offensive end of the floor, and gives us another true point guard to go along with Lanny Smith on our roster. He is a local player who will be a significant contributor on our team, and will be with us for three years."
Jones ranked fourth among NJCAA Region XIV leaders in assists with an average of 5.5 per game as a freshman at Blinn. He also chipped in with 3.9 points and 1.25 steals per game for the Buccaneers.
He went to Blinn after signing with Colorado State, but did not play for the Rams. As a high school senior at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Texas, Jones earned First-Team All-District 19-5A honors.
He also played on the same Westside All-Stars AAU team as two other members of this year's recruiting class, Dion Dowell and Nic Mosley. Dowell transferred to UH last January and Mosley signed with the Cougars last November during the early signing period.
They join Marcus Malone, Robert McKiver, Robert Lee and Tafari Toney as players who have signed with the Cougars this year.
