LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team stood in second place Monday after the first day at the Louisiana Classics.
The Cougars tied their season-low round of 281 in the morning session and then went out and bettered that mark by three strokes to finish at 559, four strokes behind Baylor.
The final 18 holes begin Tuesday morning on the 7,002-yard, par-72 course at Oakbourne Country Club.
Houston will be looking to win its third consecutive tournament to open the 2006 spring season. The Cougars already boast team titles at the Club de Golf Santa Anita/North Texas Classic on Feb. 19-20 and their own All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 27-28.
That marks the second straight season that the Cougars have won multiple tournaments and was the first time since 1985-86 that UH captured back-to-back tournament championships.
Missouri (567), Southeastern Louisiana (570), SMU (570), Memphis (571), Tulsa (572), Kent State (575), Colorado (578) and Rice (578) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, junior Ricky Romano posted back-to-back 68s to stand in a first-place tie with Baylor's Jeremy Alcorn at 8-under-par 136.
Romano was one of three Cougar linksters who finished the first day among the Top 10 individual leaders. Kevin Newman fired a career-best-tying 67 in the opening round and finished at 7-under-par 137 to stand in third place.
Senior Zach Mowbray was tied for eighth place at 141 after shooting a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. Other Cougars in action were junior Pablo Acuna who tied for 47th at 147 and sophomore Jordan Irwin who was tied for 51st at 148.
