Houston Leads after Border Olympics Day 1

Weibel paces squad, sits in third place following 4-under first two rounds, four Cougars in top 25
LAREDO & VICTORIA , Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program opened its 2026 spring season in first place with a three-stroke lead after the first day of the Border Olympics after Monday's action at the Laredo Country Club.
Senior Hudson Weibel finished the first two rounds of competition tied for third after shooting 4-under 140, two strokes back of the clubhouse leader. Weibel sank seven birdies across the first two rounds, including back-to-back birdies on Holes 8-9 in Round 1 and back-to-back birdies on Holes 9-10 in Round 2. Weibel posted a three-under 68 in Round 2 thanks to his four birdies.
Junior Chi Chun Chen and senior Kevin An tied for 12th at even-par 144 following 36 holes. Chen sank an eagle on Hole 6 in Round 1 and made four birdies through the rest of the day. Following a slow start in Round 1, An buried four-straight birdies in Round 2 and parred out the back nine to stay at even par.
Junior Grant Doggett rounded out Houston's scoring four golfers tied for 25th at three-over par 147. Doggett made five birdies in his 36 holes.
Houston's eight competitors sank 20 birdies over their 288 holes on Monday including an eagle from An.
In addition to the team action in Laredo, senior Ruben Lindsay and freshman Jakub Janda competed as individuals at the Claud Jacobs Invitational at Victoria Country Club on Monday morning. Janda finished the day in ninth while Jacobs finished two rounds in 13th. Both Jacobs and Janda were one of the 11 competitors to eagle Hole 13. Both also sank birdies on the hole in a different round.
The Cougars will tee off on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.

For Tuesday's Border Olympics action, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Lamar, North Texas and New Mexico State with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
An begins the day in the first group off No. 1 with Weibel (second group off No. 1), Chi Chun Chen (No. 2), Doggett (No. 3) and Hsuan-Yi Chen (No. 4) following. Karg starts the tournament off No. 16 with Altic (No. 17) and Hiskey II (No. 18).

Houston returns home to play host to its own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on March 16-17.
The Cougars will face Rice, Abilene Christian, Arkansas, Eastern Michigan, HCU, Lamar, Nebraska, North Texas, Odessa College, Sam Houston, Tarleton State, ULM, UT Arlington, UT Rio Grande Valley and individuals from LSU.
