IRVING - Candi Kloecker was awarded Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon as announced by the league's office. It's the first conference honor for Kloecker in her Cougar career.
The Cougars (10-1) are only one of five teams in the nation that have won ten consecutive games.
"It's not a fluke that Candi has been this successful," Holas said. "We're expecting good things from her. It makes our pitching staff stronger and more diverse."
Kloecker compiled a 3-0 mark with a 0.73 ERA in three starts this week, including a win over No. 15 Baylor. She kept opponents off-balanced holding opponents to a .157 batting average.
She started the week with her second consecutive complete game shutout, striking out a season-best 9 batters allowing only two hits against McNeese State. Kloecker carried a perfect game into the fifth inning against the Cowgirls.
The Blinn College transfer followed that up with a solid outing against No. 15 Baylor. After giving up a solo home run on the fifth pitch of the game, she retired 11 of the next 13 batters she faced.
Kloecker pushed her record to 4-0 with a six-inning outing against Northwestern State. She punched out eight batters, while allowing just five hits and two runs, both unearned in the victory.
"Pitching is where our strength should be," Holas said. "We've got to keep relying on them and they have to keep putting up those types of numbers with a big week ahead for us."
Houston heads on the road for the first time this season when it takes on No. 9 Texas A&M for a Wednesday doubleheader. The Cougars swept a doubleheader in 2004 in College Station that gave Holas her 99th is set for and 100th career victories.
First pitch is slated for 5pm at the Aggie Softball Complex. Live stats will available via Gametracker on UHCougars.com
