IRVING - Angel Shambin was named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon as announced by the league's office. It's the third C-USA award for Shamblin in her Cougar career. The Davie, Fla. native shared the honor this week with C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Keli Harrell of East Carolina.
"Angel is very deserving of this award after dominating a strong-hitting Oregon squad," head coach Kyla Holas said. "She really shut them down, staying off the plate with a majority of her pitches and kept them off-balance all game long."
The recently named C-USA Player to Watch fired a one-hit shutout, the fifth of her young career, against No. 22 Oregon Sunday morning. The Ducks came into the game 3-0 after registering two victories over No. 19 Florida earlier in the tournament.
Shamblin retired the first 12 batters she faced, carrying a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the sixth. She allowed only one hit, a single up the middle, while striking out eight. The sophomore is only nine strikeouts away from becoming the fourth Houston pitcher in career history to reach 100 career Ks.
At the plate, Shamblin also went 1-for-3 against Oregon with a double and run scored. She also went 2-for-4 with a double against No. 19 Florida and picked up an RBI in two plate appearances against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Houston returns to action against McNeese State for a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch against the Cowgirls is slated for 4pm Wednesday.
