Community Involvment
Taking an active part in the community both on campus and in the city of Houston is an important part of being a Cougar softball player.
Whether it is packing food at the Houston Food Bank, visiting children at a local hospital, playing a game of softball with the Special Olympics athletes or spending time with animals at the local Humane Society, the Cougars are always in search of a new way to give back to the community.
The service outings are something that everyone on the team looks forward to doing. What the team does for service each year is a surprise to the Cougars. The team loads up in the school vans without knowing where they're going or what they're going to do. In 2005 the team spent time with the animals at the Humane Society. Last season the team helped out the Houston Food Bank by sorting and boxing food that had been donated for the needy.
Another favorite outing for the team was going to visit children at the Texas Children's Hospital, where the Cougars gave out posters, schedule cards and signed autographs for the kids they visited. But the team doesn't just limit its community involvement to groups outside of the University of Houston.
For the 2005 Homecoming festivities, the Cougars built a float for the annual Homecoming parade and then rode it to the Homecoming football game where the team sat together and cheered on the Cougar football team.
