HOUSTON, Texas - The 2006 season continues to get better for the University of Houston, as several online publications have honored the Cougars with various awards.
CollegeFootballNews.com selected senior quarterback Kevin Kolb as the Conference USA Player of the Year. Kolb, who led the Cougars to a 34-20 win over Southern Miss in the Conference USA Championship Game on Dec. 1, was a consensus C-USA Offensive Player of the Year by both the league's media and head coaches. A starter in 49 straight games, Kolb holds virtually every passing and total offense record at UH, as well as within Conference USA.
Joining Kolb on the CFN All-C-USA Team is senior center Sterling Doty and senior free safety Will Gulley. Both Doty and Gulley were consensus selections to the C-USA First Team two weeks ago.
CFN also listed its Top Five for each position in Conference USA. Kolb was the No. 1 quarterback, while Gulley, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall and junior running back Anthony Alridge were listed as fourth best at their respective positions. Doty rounded out the positional honors with a fifth-best pick on the offensive line.
As for the "Top 30 Regardless of Position," Kolb was No. 1, followed by Alridge (#18), senior running back Jackie Battle (#22) and Gulley (#26). Kolb and Gulley were named the Houston MVPs.
Kolb picked Honorable Mention, All-America honors from SI.com. In throwing for 3,423 yards and 27 touchdowns, Kolb completed 67.7 percent of his passes (266-of-393) with just three interceptions. He also added 159 yards and four scores on the ground.
Finally, ESPN.com added another award to Kolb's mantel by naming him the Conference USA MVP.
