STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to San Francisco (18-30, 25-30, 23-30) Friday evening in the opening round of the Bankers Classic at the Spanos Center on the University of Pacific campus.
The Cougars (19-16) will face host Pacific Saturday at 7pm in the Bankers Classic consolation match.
Justine Farmer paced Houston, posting her 25th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Millicent Martin chipped in eight kills, while Ashley Calhoun tallied 12 digs. Krystal Schulle dished out a match-best 28 assists to go along with seven digs. Erin Rice slapped four kills in addition to match-high four blocks for the Cougars.
With four kills, Kelly McAnelly passed Lilly Denoon (1991-1994) for the No. 2 position in program history. The Houston native now has 1,468 kills and also passed Trish Ladusaw (Cincinnati, 1999-2002) for the No. 16 slot on the Conference USA career list.
Becca Sartori also added four kills, surpassing Kelly Trimble (Southern Miss, 1998-2001) and Brittany Barnett (Memphis, 2000-2003) for the No. 27 spot on the C-USA career list.
The USF (23-9) offense cranked out a .368 attack percentage for the match. Kristen Hasselberg fueled the Dons attack, powering home 17 kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Alix Gombos notched 10 kills on .412 clip, while Carly Babin and Brynn Maurer smashed nine and eight kills, respectively.
The two teams traded blows in the first game, but the Dons capitalized on a trio of UH attack errors to jump out to an 11-7 advantage. USF continued its run after a Cougar timeout, reeling off five of the next seven points for a 17-10 lead. The Cougars pulled to within 18-14 on a block from Farmer and Rice, but USF used a 12-4 spurt to win game one going away, 30-18.
Houston took its first lead of the evening at 10-9 in game two on a Rice kill. The Dons responded with five consecutive points to go ahead 14-10, but the Cougars pulled to within 21-20 on a USF ball handling error. A pair of USF service aces provided the difference in a 30-25 victory.
The Dons kept the momentum out of the locker room, firing out to a 10-6 margin in the third game. Houston put together a 12-6 run to grab a 18-16 edge, but the momentum was short-lived as USF scored 14 of the last 19 points for a 30-23 win.
The Cougars concludes the regular season with a match against host Pacific in the Bankers Classic consolation match. First serve is slated for 7pm on the UOP campus.
