2006 Houston Cougars Football Postgame Notes
(ARV) Houston Cougars (9-3, 7-1 C-USA) at Memphis Tigers (1-10, 0-7 C-USA)

TEAM NOTES
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars improved to 9-3 overall in 2006 and are bowl eligible... If the Cougars are selected for a bowl at the end of the regular season, they will compete in a bowl game for the third time in the last four years... It will mark the first time that UH has appeared in three bowls in four years since the 1978-81 Cougar teams competed in four straight bowl games (1978 Cotton; 1979 Cotton; 1980 Garden State and 1981 Sun).
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars clinched the outright C-USA West Division championship and earned the right to host the C-USA Championship game at 7 p.m., Dec. 1 at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium... The Cougars will face the East Division champion (East Carolina or Southern Miss) with a berth to the Liberty Bowl on the line.
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars won the C-USA West Division championship and will appear in the C-USA Championship game for the first time in school history... However, it is not the first C-USA football title for UH... The Cougars won the 1996 C-USA championship and advanced to the Liberty Bowl during their first year in the league.
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars recorded their ninth victory in 2006... It marks the most wins for the Cougars since the 1990 team posted a 10-1 record.
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars won their fifth straight game of the 2006 season... It was the first time since the 1990 team opened the season with eight straight wins that the Cougars recorded a five-game winning streak.
** Houston improved to 10-9 (.526) in the all-time series against Memphis and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Tigers... The Cougars had lost their previous three games to Memphis by an average margin of 24.3 points per game... UH has not enjoyed a win over the Tigers since taking a 26-21 win at the Liberty Bowl on Nov. 2, 2002.
** Houston improved to 119-96-4 (.553) all-time during the month of November.
** Houston improved to 12-11 (.522) all-time against teams from the state of Tennessee.
** Houston improved to 80-65-1 (.551) all-time against current Conference USA teams.
** Houston improved to 4-2 (.667) all-time when playing on Nov. 18.
** The Cougars have allowed only 53 combined points in the second half during their nine wins.
** Saturday's game at Memphis was the first time in the 2006 season that the Cougars failed to score in the third quarter.
** Saturday's game marked the fifth consecutive season that the Cougars played at least one overtime game... The Cougars improved to 5-4 (.556) all-time in overtime games... The Cougars snapped a four-game losing streak in overtime games and improved to 3-3 (.500) all-time in overtime games on the road.... Ironically, UH's last win in overtime was a 33-30 victory in triple overtime at Memphis on Oct. 21, 2000.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
** With 137 rushing yards, senior running back Jackie Battle recorded the fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career and his third of the 2006 season... It also was the first time during his career that he recorded consecutive 100-yard rushing games... The Cougars improved to 2-1 (.667) during games in which Battle rushes for at least 100 yards.
** Senior quarterback Kevin Kolb made the 48th consecutive start of his career... With that total, he added to his UH record total for the most consecutive starts by a quarterback in UH history... His streak tied Kade Lane (2002-05) who played in 48 consecutive games during his career for the UH record.
** With 166 passing yards, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past 3,000 passing yards during the 2006 season and finished with 3,165 passing yards this year... His total is the sixth-highest mark in UH single-season history... It marked the second straight season and the third time in his career that Kolb has thrown for at least 3,000 yards in a season... He is the only quarterback in UH history to accomplish that feat... He also joins David Klingler (1990-91) as the only quarterbacks to throw for at least 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.
** With 48 career starts, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved into a tie for fifth place in NCAA Division I-A history with Ohio State's Art Schlichter, who started 48 games from 1978-81... Up next in the NCAA records book is Syracuse's Donovan McNabb, who started 49 games from 1995-98.
** With his 13-yard touchdown pass to Donnie Avery at the 5:22 mark of the second quarter, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb recorded the 100th touchdown for which he was responsible during his career... Kolb already holds the school record in that category.
** With two touchdown passes, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb recorded his ninth game in 2006 with multi-TD passes and the 26th multi-touchdown game of his career.
** With his catch in the second quarter, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall caught a pass in his 48th consecutive game... He added to his UH record, topping the previous best of 43 straight games by wide receiver Orlando Iglesias (1997-01).
** With eight receptions, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall moved into 19th place in NCAA Division I-A history with 255 career catches... Up next in the NCAA records book are Wyoming's Marcus Harris (1993-96) and Texas Tech's Wes Welker (2000-03) who caught 259 passes during their respective careers.
** With his 27-yard touchdown reception at the 8:12 mark of the second quarter, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall recorded the 24th TD catch of his career to tie Brandon Middleton (1999-03) for third place in UH history... Up next in the UH records book is Manny Hazard who caught 31 touchdown passes from 1989 to 1990.
** With his 27-yard touchdown reception at the 8:12 mark of the second quarter, senior wide receiver Vincent Marshall recorded the 26th touchdown of his career to tie Paul Gipson (1966-68) and Joffrey Reynolds (1999-02) for eighth place in UH history... Up next in the UH records book is Kimble Anders who scored 27 touchdowns from 1985 to 1989.
** Senior running back Roshawn Pope competed in the 49th game of his collegiate career to set a UH record... Larry Shepherd (1981-85) and Kade Lane (2002-05) each played in 48 consecutive games during their respective careers.
** With two interceptions, senior free safety Will Gulley recorded his team-leading sixth interception of the 2006 season... Gulley moved Calvin Eason (1980-82) and Paul Shires (1966-68) into sole possession of fifth place in UH career history with 13 pickoffs... Up next in the UH records book are Johnny Jackson (1986-88), Anthony Francis (1975-77) and Gus Hollomon (1965-67) who each intercepted 14 passes during their careers.
** With two interceptions, senior free safety Will Gulley recorded the third multi-interception game of his collegiate career.
** Freshman linebacker Matt Nicholson recorded his first career fumble recovery at the 5:12 mark of the second quarter.
** With his 38-yard field goal in the second quarter, sophomore kicker Ben Bell recorded at least one field goal in his fifth straight game.
** With three field goals, sophomore kicker Ben Bell recorded his fifth game of the 2006 season and the seventh game of his collegiate career with at least two field goals... It also was a single-game high for Bell, topping his previous high of two field goals set on seven occasions and most recently against C-USA rival Tulsa on Nov. 4, 2006.
