HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team continues preparations for this weekend's home contest against Louisiana-Lafayette with a solid workout Wednesday afternoon on the UH practice fields.
While the Cougars look to rebound from their first loss of the season, head coach Art Briles said he saw no lingering effects from last weekend during the second practice of the Louisiana-Lafayette game week.
"We have a determined bunch of people. We have to shake that off and move on. We don't have the luxury of moping around and thinking of the what ifs," said Briles, who is now in his fourth season at the helm of the Cougar program. "We do have the fortunate ability to change what is in front of us. What we have to do now is focus on beating UL Lafayette and get another non-conference win and then get into conference play."
Houston returns home for the contest against UL Lafayette before traveling to Southern Mississippi on Oct. 14. The Cougars practiced for over two hours Thursday and spent most of the time focusing on the last non-conference game on the season.
"We had a lot intensity, a lot of focus and a lot of learning," said Briles. "There was a lot of good learning from the players standpoint and a lot of teaching from the coaches standpoint."
UL Lafayette is coming off a convincing 33-14 win over Eastern Michigan. Quarterback Jerry Babb completed 17-of-21 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougars wrap up their 2006 non-conference schedule when they play host to Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m., Saturday at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. That game can be heard live on ESPN 790 AM with the pregame show beginning one hour before kickoff. Tom Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while former record-setting UH quarterback David Klingler will provide color analysis. Former All-Southwest Conference center Chuck Brown serves as the sideline reporter. All Cougar Football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com.
The Cougars (4-1, 2-0 C-USA) come into the game on the heels of a tough 14-13 loss at perennial national power Miami (Fla.) last weekend in the Orange Bowl.
