HOUSTON - University of Houston freshmen swimmers Kristine Kelly and Linda Fox recently were named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All American Team by USA Swimming.
Kelly and Fox were honored for their scholastic and academic achievements and were named to the elite squad for the third year in a row. Kelly competed for the Houston Cougar Aquatic Sports, while Fox swam for the Houston Swim Club.
USA Swimming honors swimmers who maintain a 3.75 grade point average and compete at the national level in swimming competition during their high school years.
Both swimmers maintained their high GPAs and competed in both the SPEEDO Champions Series Short Course and Long Course Championships to receive the honors.
The two newcomers join a Cougar Swimming and Diving program that already has established itself as an award-winning academic program. A year ago, 12 UH swimmers and divers were named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting GPAs of 3.0 or higher while senior Szintia Szanto received the C-USA Academic Medal - for a 3.75 GPA or higher - for the third consecutive season.
Kelly, Fox and their Cougar teammates begin their seasons as the Cougars play host to the annual Red & White Meet at 3 p.m., Wednesday at UH's Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. The Cougars officially open their 2006-07 season when they meet Northern Colorado and New Mexico State in a tri-meet beginning at 3 p.m., Oct. 13 and wrapping up at 10 a.m., Oct. 14.
The Cougars open their 2006-07 home schedule at 10 a.m., Oct. 28 at the CRWC Natatorium when they play host to Oregon State and C-USA rival SMU.
