HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team returned from a two-game road trip and dropped a 1-0 contest to No. 22 SMU, Friday in Conference USA action on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars (7-8, 1-4 C-USA) are 0-7 all-time against the Mustangs (11-2-1, 4-0 C-USA). UH losing streak has hit four games, the first time that has happened since 2004.
Houston was outshot by a 21-3 margin. The Cougars best chance, and lone shot on goal came off a Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) header in the second half. After a corner kick serve, Godbolt headed one towards the net but right into the arms of SMU keeper Ashley Gunter.
UH's lack of offense was by design as the team's focus was on slowing down a fast-paced SMU squad. The Mustangs, took a majority of their shots from outside the box with only six of the 21 ending up on goal.
SMU got on the board in the 33rd minute when Olivia O'Rear found her way behind the defense off a give-and-go from Krystal Bailey. She moved to the right side of Scott and fired a rocket that got past UH goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) caught the left side of the net. Carley Philips also had an assist on the goal.
Scott made six saves on the 21 shots she faced, taking the loss. Gunter was not as busy on the evening, making her lone save off Godbolt's header.
Houston returns to action Sunday, taking on Tulsa at 1 p.m. CST at Robertson Stadium.
