HOUSTON - Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) scored her second goal of the day 30 seconds into the second overtime period to lead the University of Houston soccer team to a 3-2 double overtime win over Tulsa on a rainy Sunday at Robertson Stadium.
Mundy weaved her way behind the Tulsa defense and after receiving the ball from Brittney Pfeiffer (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS), moved to the center of the box and fired a shot to the right of Tulsa goalkeeper Kendall Harclerode for the win.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Houston (8-8, 2-4 Conference USA) on a day when the weather did not want to cooperate. The game was played in a steady rain, which stopped at halftime and started again at the beginning of the second 45 minutes. The rain picked up to a downpour in the last 10 minutes of regulation and for both overtime periods. Tulsa's record drops to 5-9 (1-4 C-USA).
Tulsa created some high drama of its own, tying the contest at two goals apiece in the 89th minute. Megan Cash, who also had two goals in the game, took a free kick from the right side which UH keeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) could not get a handle on. In the wet conditions the ball slid out of Scott's hands and over the line.
The Golden Hurricane got on the board first in the 47th minute after a scoreless first half. Cash found herself on the end of a free kick from Katie Ward and she headed it home.
The Cougars, who had been playing defensively to combat Tulsa's speed up front, switched to an attacking formation and nailed the equalizer in the 59th minute. Jennifer Dry (Norman, Okla./Norman HS) played the ball into the right side of the box and pulled Harclerode off her line. Dry served the ball to a streaking Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS), who tapped it into the empty net for her third goal of the season.
Mundy gave UH a 2-1 cushion in the 74th minute with a bending ball from 15 yards out that caught the left edge of the net. She unleashed the shot after dribbling through a good portion of the Tulsa defense in the box.
Mundy now has 10 goals on the season and 24 for her career. She is three goals shy of tying Nikki Hawkins' (2001-04) career mark of 27. Mundy, with 60 career points (24g, 12a), is also three shy of Hawkins' 63-point school mark. It was also the sixth game winner of her career, tying her for second all-time with Ashley Fortenberry (1999-2002). The school record is seven, held by Hawkins.
UH was again on the defensive, and a late foul set up Cash's tying free kick. Scott made six saves and earned the win, while Harclerode made nine saves on UH's 19 shots.
Houston plays UAB and Memphis on the road next weekend with only three regular-season games left to decide the eight teams that qualify for the C-USA Championship, taking place Nov. 1-5 in Dallas. Friday's kickoff in Birmingham, Ala. is set for 7 p.m. CDT while Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m.
