IRVING - Loli Gomez was named Conference USA Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon as announced by the league's office. It's the first award for Gomez in her Cougar career.
"I'm excited and proud anytime one of our players is recognized for their accomplishments on the court," head coach John Severance said. "This is a good award for Loli and for our team."
Gomez opened the spring season going 4-0 in two matches last weekend as the Cougars began year two under head coach John Severance with identical 7-0 shutouts over Prairie View A&M and Stephen F. Austin.
Gomez won all four of her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. After rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 singles victory over Prairie View A&M's Marika Dawkins, which clinched the match for the Cougars, Gomez found herself down 5-4 in the first set against Stephen F. Austin's Laura Harrison. She responded by winning nine of the final 10 games en route to a 7-5, 6-1 win.
"The good thing is that Loli can overcome when she isn't playing her best tennis," Severance said after Sunday's match. "To win at the No. 1 spot when you're not playing very well is extremely difficult. Give credit to her for realizing she wasn't playing her best but still fighting her way to a strong victory."
The junior teamed with Sonja Nikolic in doubles, recording 8-0 and 8-3 decisions against Prairie View A&M's Dawkins and Antoinette Majors and SFA's Megan Langston and Kama Scott, respectively.
Houston hits the road for the first time this season taking on C-USA foe Southern Miss Tuesday, before heading to No. 33 Mississippi State Wednesday.
