HOUSTON - University of Houston junior righthander Brad Lincoln was one of 40 players named to the 2006 Roger Clemens Award Preliminary Watch List on Friday.
A year ago, Lincoln posted a 4-7 record with a team-high 106 strikeouts and a 4.76 ERA in 102.0 innings of work. He became only the seventh player in school history to record at least 100 strikeouts in a single-season.
In addition to his pitching numbers, the Clute, Texas, native also was an offensive asset at the plate for the Cougars in 2005. He ended the year with a .337 batting average, seven home runs and 52 RBIs.
Following the collegiate season, he continued his trade at the prestigious Cape Cod League where he worked to a 3-1 record with a minuscule 1.32 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 54.0 innings of work.
Combined with six home runs and 25 RBIs at the plate, Lincoln was named to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game as a starter while playing for the Bourne Braves. At the end of the season, he was named to the All-Cape Cod League Team as a utility player after helping lead the Braves the West Division championship.
For his impressive efforts, he received the Manny Robello 10th Player Award and was listed as the Cape Cod League's No. 6 prospect by Baseball America magazine.
The third Clemens Award will be presented to the nation's top college pitcher at the conclusion of a gala dinner in Houston in July. All Division I head baseball coaches will take part in the voting for the honor, in addition to a selected panel of national media and all past winners of the Rotary Smith Award, which was retired after the 2003 dinner by the committee that is sponsoring the Clemens Award.
The Roger Clemens Award was named after future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens, who began his march to stardom while leading the University of Texas to the College World Series title in 1983. As a professional, Clemens has won 341 games (9th best in history), fanned 4,502 hitters and won seven Cy Young Awards, emblematic as the top pitcher in his league. The Roger Clemens Award is the only award of its kind, honoring the finest pitchers in college baseball.
The event is administered by the Greater Houston Baseball Association, who has donated $200,000 to the designated beneficiaries (The Roger Clemens Foundation, The Karl Young Summer College Baseball League and Baseball USA) from the net proceeds from the first two dinners. The GHBA is a non-profit 501.3 (C) organization dedicated to the growth of amateur baseball in the Houston area.
