The University of Houston men's basketball team used 15-0 run midway through the second half to pull out a 62-58 victory over Southern Miss in a Conference USA game at Hofheinz Pavilion on Wednesday, January 18.
The Cougars trailed 35-34 with 13:06 left to play when Brian Latham hit Sam Anderson for a lay-up against Southern Miss' two-three zone to give the Cougars a 36-35 lead, an advantage they didn't surrender.
Latham also found Ramon Dyer for a three-pointer from the top of the key on Houston's next possession.
Southern Miss head coach Larry Eustachy was called for a technical foul after Sam Anderson rebounded a missed lay-up by Travis Hall and was fouled by David Cornwell of the Golden Eagles.
Houston's Corey Bloom hit both free throws to give Houston a six-point lead. Then, Lanny Smith hit back-to-back three-point field goals and Ramon Dyer scored a lay-up off of a steal by Bloom to give the Cougars a 49-35 lead.
Southern Miss used a 12-2 run of its own to climb back to within 53-50 with 1:30 left to play. On Houston's next possession, the Cougars ran the shot clock down before Oliver Lafayette broke out of a three-point shooting slump, and canned a triple from the right wing to put Houston back up 56-50 with 55 seconds left.
Houston made six of their eight free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory and help the Cougars win their first Conference USA game of the season.
Smith scored 18 points, and Dyer added 16 points for Houston, which improved its record to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in C-USA play. Southern Miss, which fell to 7-11 on the season and also is 1-2 in Conference USA, was led by Courtney Beasley's 17 points.
