HOUSTON, Texas - On the heels of her career-best 37-point showing against Rice Sunday, Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) earned her first-career Conference USA Player of the Week honor, the league office announced Monday.
The sophomore transfer shared the weekly honor with Southern Miss' Amber Eugene.
Jackson averaged 24.5 points per game on the weekend, helping UH run its consecutive victory streak to four with wins over East Carolina and preseason C-USA favorite Rice. With Sunday's win, UH moved into a tie with Marshall for first place as both teams are at 4-0 in conference play. Against the Pirates, Jackson tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
She closed out the weekend with a career-high 37 points on a 14-for-29 shooting effort, including 7-for-11 from the charity stripe as the Cougars knocked off the Owls in front of a season-high 1,763 fans at Hofheinz Pavilion and a national television audience on ESPN2.
She is the first UH player to top the 30-point plateau since C-USA Player of the Decade Chandi Jones tallied 36 points against TCU on March 7, 2004.
Her performance is the best single-game effort by a league player this year. In her eight games, she has averaged 18.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 6.5 apg., all numbers that would place her among the league leaders if she had played in the required number of games (75 percent).
Houston returns to action next weekend with a pair of road league games on the slate. The Cougars travel to SMU for a 7 p.m. CST tilt on Friday before heading to Tulsa for a Sunday matchup at 2 p.m.
