HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team blew by Grambling State 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in their home debut at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
"It's always nice to get your first win on your home field," head coach Bill Solberg said. "We talked about going undefeated at home this season. This is a good start to reaching that goal."
Houston dominated the match from start to finish as they out-shot the Tigers 33-7.
The Cougars got things started in the 22nd minute as a cross from forward Sarah Fisher found Sophia Mundy to put UH up, 1-0. The assist from Fisher gave Mundy her first career goal at Houston.
Only four minutes later the Cougars struck again when forward Sarah Fisher scored off the top post unassisted to attain her 5th career goal and put the Houston up, 2-0.
"I thought the goals that we scored were good," Solberg said. "Some of the buildups and combinations we played to get it in-line and serve the ball back were good. We just have to fine tune a couple of things and add to our goals throughout the year."
After halftime, Houston started right where it left off. At the 58:07 mark, Mundy scored once again, this time on an assist from Abbey Betlack.
In the 88th minute, the Cougars worked the ball around for their final goal as Courtney Gaines found Brittney Pfeiffer, who executed a perfect touch pass to Abbey Betlack.
For the second match in a row goalie Stephanie Pucek provided outstanding play at the goalie position. After limiting Baylor to only one goal on August 26, Pucek shut down the Grambling State attack with 5 saves on the day.
Next up for Houston is a home match against TCU (1-2) this Tuesday at 3 p.m.
