HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team blew by Stephen F. Austin 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium behind two goals from forward Kristin Bay.
"It was a physical battle today. Our scouting report on Stephen F. Austin said that they simply try and out work everybody," said head coach Bill Solberg. We made it a point that we had to win 50 percent of the battles, we had to play aggressive, and we had to play physical."
The game stayed scoreless through a majority of the first half when Bay scored her first goal off of a crossing pass from Sarah Fisher at the 43 minute mark to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Fisher scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Sophia Mundy to put the Cougars up 2-0 at the 54 minute mark of the second half.
Then, at the 79 minute mark, Kim Gray scored SFA's lone goal of the day off a corner kick.
"We stuck to our game plan," said Solberg.
"We gutted it out at the end, and it's nice to know that when we get scored upon, then we can come right back and score ourselves."
That's exactly what happened one minute and 16 seconds later.
Bay garnered her second goal of the game on a header after out-battling the Lumberjacks' Jessica Green for the ball on a corner kick.
"She scored her first goal by being exactly where we asked her to be on the field," Solberg said. "On the corner kick, she went and found the ball to redirect it into the back of the net. She was clutch performer in the game, and those two goals proved to be the difference for us."
The Cougars, who have won three of their last four games, raised their overall season record to 3-2, and have gained some momentum heading into next weekend's pair of games against Texas Southern and North Texas.
