HOUSTON - Sophia Mundy pumped home a school record four goals as the University of Houston soccer team rolled past Texas Southern at Robertson Stadium on Friday night, 10-0.
"She is just so quick, for a player like that to come out and set a record was amazing," head coach Bill Solberg said. "She set a new standard tonight."
UH outshot TSU by an astonishing 69-0 margin. That mark of 69 shots broke the team record mark of 37 that was last set on September 10, 2000, against UL-Lafayette.
The Cougars dominated the Tigers all night keeping the ball in the TSU half of the field for a majority of the game as UH keeper Lynn Baker made her first touch at the 33 minute mark.
"We set some goals, and one of them was to not allow any shots tonight, and we accomplished that," Solberg said.
Abbey Betlach got things started off for UH with her second goal of the season off a cross from Kristin Bay in the 2nd minute giving the Cougars a quick 1-0 advantage.
Houston struck again at the 23 minute mark when Sophia Mundy scored her third goal of the season ripping a shot from 20 yards away putting UH ahead 2-0.
The Cougars scored twice just minutes before halftime. Mundy scored again unassisted at the 44 minute mark, and defender Maegan Kiphart got the ball in the net just seconds later off a rebound in the box to put UH up by a 4-0 count going into halftime.
Nineteen minutes into the second half, Mundy pulled off the hat trick as the Cougars went up 5-0.
"I felt the need to step up, I wanted to contribute to the team effort," Mundy said. "Every game our coach tell us what our goals are for the game, and our number one goal is always a shutout so I'm really glad we got the shutout tonight."
Houston got goals from Kristin Bay, Jessica Green, two goals from Heather Williams, and the record setter by Mundy for the final margin of 10-0.
Next up for UH is a match up with in-state foe North Texas at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Robertson Stadium.
"It's always good to get a few wins to get our momentum going before we play a team like North Texas," Mundy said.
Fans can purchase tickets to Sunday's match by calling 713-GO-COOGS or by visiting the tickets link on the main page of UHCougars.com. Students can gain free entry by displaying their Cougar1 Card.
"We have to play with some more intensity and some more urgency against North Texas (this Sunday) to give us a chance," Solberg said.
