HOUSTON, Texas - For the first time since reporting to camp last week, the University of Houston held an intra-squad scrimmage for an hour-a-half this afternoon on the UH Practice Fields.
Running a variety of units against one another, the Cougars were able to go full speed for the first time in preseason camp. Junior quarterback Kevin Kolb looked sharp during the drills, connecting on several short, medium and long routes to several of his wide receivers. Junior Vincent Marshall and sophomore Donnie Avery were on the receiving end of a few scores.
Senior running backs Anthony Evans and Ryan Gilbert both reached paydirt during the scrimmage as well.
Even under controlled situations, UH head coach Art Briles was pleased with what he saw this afternoon.
"It was pretty workman-like out there," said Briles, "which isn't bad this time of year when you've gone this many days in a row. I saw some good things on both sides of the ball.
"I'd like to see things more crisp with a little more flying around, but those things will get there. We really haven't loosened the reins on them, and when we do we certainly expect them to respond."
The Cougars have now completed one full week of practice since officially reporting last Tuesday. So far, Houston is progressing as planned.
"We've really had some good practices," added Briles. "When I say good, I mean they are focused and getting after it. Main thing we are stressing right now is preparing ourselves physically and mentally, but also taking care of each other because we do not want to loose anyone out here on the practice field."
With summer finals upon them, the Cougars will not have a large practice tomorrow. Instead, Houston will take part in a light walk through around 5:30 pm.
