HOUSTON - Senior Day at the Cougar Softball Field was washed out by rain in the top of the fourth inning, forcing a no-decision between the Cougars and UAB in the final game of their Conference USA series on Sunday afternoon.
The rainout ended the final home game for six Houston seniors as Jeanie Davis, Kristen Glowacz, Michelle Keith, Kim Nesloney, Jenilee Skender, and Lindsay Vanover said farewell to the hometown crowd.
After taking the first two games of the series by 6-2 and 4-3 finals on Saturday, the Cougars secured their spot in the C-USA Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 12 in Tampa, Fla., where Houston will enter as the No. 5 seed.
The C-USA Tournament match ups will be announced on Monday, May 9.
Below are the bios of the six senior student-athletes from the 2005 Houston softball program as well as the team manager.
Infielder, Jeanie Davis> who was accompanied by her mother Pennie Davis.
Jeanie was a part of the first recruiting class and the inaugural 2001 University of Houston softball team. An ACL injury forced her to redshirt her first season, but since then she has been a significant contributor to the team's success over the last four seasons. A multi-talented infielder, Jeanie has seen action at shortstop, third base, second base and first base. She leaves the Cougars ranked in the top-10 of 16 different statistical career records including the fourth most home runs in the program's history with 18. Earlier this season she turned in two home runs with three runs and three RBI against Texas Southern. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 5, Jeanie Davis.
First baseman, Michelle Keith, who was accompanied by her parents, Steve and Celeisa Keith, and by her fiancé Rock Meeks.
A co-captain on this season's squad, Michelle has put up the best numbers of her career this season. In her time as a Cougar, Michelle has seen action in the pitching circle but has been a solid and reliable contributor at first base. She currently appears in the top-10 of 21 career statistical categories, and owns the record for most double plays turned with 15, and needs just 23 more putouts to become the UH career leader. Offensively Michelle has helped Houston to be one of the top offensive teams in the conference. This season she has hit six home runs, two of which were game winners, and is number five on the career home run list. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 10, Michelle Keith.
Third baseman, Kristen Glowacz, who was accompanied by her parents John and Beth Glowacz.
As the most decorated player in the history of Cougar softball, Kristen has set the standard of excellence for those to follow in the years to come. Starting in 2002 when she was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, Glow has continued to produce offensively and make defensive plays for the Cougars. Her list of accolades includes two consecutive All-South Region Second Team citations, a pair of All-Conference First Team awards, a 2002 All-Freshman Team nod, and seven Conference USA Hitter of the Week honors. She also brought home the first USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week honor to Houston after hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs in a single game against number 16 Nebraska. As the Houston MVP for the last two years, Kristen has placed her name atop of 14 career records and nine single season records, as well as three single game records. Among those records are most hits, runs, highest batting average, and most home runs. This season, the third baseman leads the team in 11 statistical categories as well as leading the conference with her 17 home runs to date on the year. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 7, Kristen Glowacz.
Outfielder, Kim Nesloney, who was accompanied by her parents Rick and Sheryl Nesloney and her sister Callie.
The Cougars' co-captain for the second straight season, Kim has always fueled Houston with a desire to work hard and a passion to win. She has established herself as one of the biggest offensive produces in school history as she appears in the top 10 of 19 career categories of which 15 see her name in the top five. No other Cougar has been walked as often as her, hit as many triples as her, or stolen as many bases as her. She was named All-Freshman in 2002 and to the Conference All-Tournament Team in 2003. Her ability to break on a fly ball along with her diving acrobatics in centerfield has made her one of the top fielder's in the conference. Beginning with back-to-back home runs off of the nation's top pitcher, Nes has continued to turn in the best statistical season of her career in the 2005 campaign. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 33, Kim Nesloney.
Catcher and designated player, Jenilee Skender, who was accompanied by her parents Jim and Alberta Skender and her brothers Ryan and Robby.
Opponents have always feared Jenilee's ability to come up with big hits at big moments. Last season, Skender was responsible for the hit that drove in the game-winning run for the Cougars' first win at the NCAA Regionals. She was named to the 2002 Conference USA All-Freshman Team, and received All-Conference Second Team honors and All-Conference Tournament Team recognition in 2004. At the outset of this season she was selected by league coaches as the preseason All-Conference designated player. Playing at first base, catcher and DP during her career, Jenilee's name appears on 21 career records, where she owns the mark for most intentional walks, and ranks among the top five in hits, batting average and home runs. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 22, Jenilee Skender.
Catcher, Lindsay Vanover, who was accompanied by her parents Sharon and Finis Vanover.
A former walk-on to the team, Lindsay established herself as an integral part of the Cougars' success in the pitching circle. Working with the Cougar pitching crew, the Cougar catcher helped former Cougar Jenny Johnson become the NCAA saves leader, and was behind the plate this season when junior Carla Kennimer threw the first of four no-hitters for the Cougars. This season she led the Houston catchers with 103 putouts, and turned in a career high 11 putouts in a 6-3 Cougar victory over Western Michigan. Ladies and Gentlemen, number 23, Lindsay Vanover.
