HOUSTON - Freshman Angel Shamblin tossed the second no-hitter of her career and Houston's fourth of the season, as the Cougars cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Conference USA rival Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon.
Playing the twin bill at the Cougar Softball Field, Houston improved to 5-6 in C-USA play with their 8-0 and 7-1 victories over the Billikens (13-19, 4-10), and now stand at 22-20 on the year.
Junior right fielder Brandi Clark drilled home runs in both games to help fuel the Houston offense to the back-to-back victories, while senior Kristen Glowacz tied her own single season record for most home runs in a season with her 14th of the year.
Shamblin, who threw the first perfect game in school history back in February, walked the first SLU batter she faced in Game1, and from then on found her groove and retired the next 14 hitters.
The Cougars used a five-run first inning to build the lead on their way to a run-rule victory over the Billikens in five innings.
In that first inning with two outs, senior Jenilee Skender hit a deep single into left field that drove in freshman Dru Daniels and Glowacz, whom had reached on a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively.
Still in the first, senior Jeanie Davis reached first on a single advancing Skender to second. Then with two runners on, Clark dialed up her first long distance play of the day putting the ball over the right field fence, and giving Houston a 5-0 lead.
While Shamblin continued to retire the Billiken batters in three-up-three-down succession, Clark helped Houston added to its lead in the third inning with a double down the leftfield line again driving in Davis and Skender.
Leading 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Glowacz shut the door on the Billikens with a double to left field that brought home Daniels for the game winning run.
For Daniels, her run in the first inning proved to be the game winner and it was the second time this week the second baseman scored the winning run for the Cougars. The first time was in Wednesday's 3-2 Game-1 win over Sam Houston State.
Sophomore Carla Kennimer picked up her seventh win of the season in Game 2, throwing a complete game while scattering three hits and allowing just one run.
Clark got the Cougars rolling with her second home run on the day, this time firing the ball over the leftfield fence for a solo shot in the second inning. Later in the inning with two outs, freshman Jennifer Walsh scored what proved to be the game-winning run on an error by the SLU shortstop that allowed her to score from third.
The Billikens scored their lone run on the day off in the fourth off a solo home run by Beth Schomaker to bring SLU to within one at 2-1.
However, the Cougars ran off three runs in the fifth, and added two more in the sixth with solo homers by senior Kim Nesloney and Glowacz.
The Cougars will look to complete the series sweep of the Billikens Sunday afternoon beginning at noon in the final game of the series between the two teams at the Cougar Softball Field. Admission is free to the public.
