Softball Falls To Bulls In C-USA Play

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team dropped a doubleheader with Conference USA rival USF at the Cougar Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
Despite out hitting the Bulls (35-20, 12-5) by an 8-4 margin in Game 1, the Cougars (25-23, 8-9) couldn't manufacture more than one run in the 5-1 loss that saw freshman Angel Shamblin fan eight batters.
Junior Crystal Briscoe returned to the starting lineup in Game 2, and allowed just one run in a complete-game performance in which she struck out five batters, but the one run was all the Bulls needed to squeak out a 1-0 victory.
For Briscoe it was her first game back in the starting position since pitching the Cougars to a 6-3 win over Western Michigan at home back on March 3.
In Game 1, back-to-back singles by senior Michelle Keith and junior Brandi Clark set the Cougars up for their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth down 2-0. Houston scored when the USF catcher, attempting to throw out Keith at second, airmailed the ball into center field allowing both runners to advance a base.
Junior Brooke Johnson hit a long sacrifice fly into left field that allowed Keith to tag up for to bring Houston to with one at 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth.
However, a three-run USF homer in the top of the sixth sealed the victory for the Bulls as they went on to claim the Game 1 by a score of 5-1.
Game 2 saw five scoreless innings of play before the Bulls put together a one-run-three-hit inning to take a 1-0 lead that would prove to be all that USF needed to sweep the twin bill.
Houston and the Bulls close up the C-USA series with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, April 24, at the Cougar Softball Field on the main campus of the University of Houston.
