HOUSTON - A two-run homer in the third inning by senior Michelle Keith was enough to secure a 3-2 victory against USF for the Houston softball team on Sunday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Field.
Junior southpaw Carla Kennimer and freshman Barbie Love teamed up for the Houston win. Kennimer picked up her ninth win of the season as she scattered three hits while allowing two runs in the game, and struck out four batters in six innings of work. Love came in to earn her third save of the season, allowing one hit and fanning two.
At the plate, both Keith and Nesloney provided the offensive firepower as Nesloney went 1-for-2 with a home run and Keith was 2-for-3 with the game-winning hit.
Nesloney wasted no time in giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead on the day. In the first inning, the centerfielder blasted the second pitch of the ballgame over the left centerfield fence for her ninth bomb of the year.
With two outs in the second, the Cougars had an opportunity to build on its lead after the Bulls' Danielle Urbanik walked the bases loaded, but freshman Dru Daniels popped out to end the inning.
In the third inning, senior Jenilee Skender reached base on a walk, bringing senior Michelle Keith to the plate with one out. Keith then added two more runs to the Cougars' total by firing out a two-run homer over the leftfield fence, putting Houston ahead 3-0.
Kennimer had thrown a no-hitter against the Bulls through the first four innings, but in the fifth, the Bulls got a hold of two balls with a single followed by a home run to close the Cougar lead to just one run at 3-2 after five innings.
In the top of the seventh, Love came in to close out the game and did so while giving up one hit but not a single run.
Houston next heads out to Louisville, Ky., to face the Cardinals in its second to last C-USA season series for the Cougars before the C-USA Tournament.
