HOUSTON - Conference USA action continues this weekend for the Houston softball team as the Cougars host the USF Bulls in a three-game series this Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, at the Cougar Softball Field.
Houston (23-21, 8-7) is currently fifth in the C-USA standings after winning 2-of-3 games at Southern Miss last weekend, while the Bulls (33-20, 10-5) hold the league's fourth spot, and swept Charlotte last weekend.
The Cougars have been playing well as of late where they are 7-3 in their last 10 outings, made possible by a season long seven-game winning streak that ended on Sunday.
Last weekend against Southern Miss, Houston recorded two shutout victories against the Golden Eagles, before falling in Sunday's game by a score of 3-0.
South Florida is fresh off a mid-week win against UCF that saw the Bulls take a 5-3 decision with an eight hit performance.
As a team, the Bulls are hitting a combined .300, which ranks No. 30 in the nation. The team carries five batters hitting above the .300 mark, with Tiffany Stewart and Samantha Ray leading the team with averages of .376 and .375, respectively.
Stewart leads the team in runs (37) while Ray leads the team in hits (66), but neither leads USF in RBI or home runs.
Leading the Bulls from the circle this season has been freshman Bree Spence who is 16-11, has logged a team-high 181.2 innings, and carries an ERA of 2.00. She has also allowed 188 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 97 and giving up nine home runs.
The freshman is also steady at the plate, Spence is batting .266 with 20 runs on 25 hits, four home runs and 23 RBI in 94 at-bats.
For the Cougars, with four players on the team hitting above .300 and senior Kristen Glowacz ranking second in the conference with her .397 average, Houston will be looking to heat up their bats after recording nine hits in its last series against Southern Miss.
Glowacz needs just one more home run to break her own single season home run record that currently stands at 14 bombs. She has already broken the career home run record, the career hits record, career RBI record, career at-bats record and career runs records.
In the circle for the Cougars, the young staff of freshmen Barbie Love and Angel Shamblin along with sophomore Carla Kennimer and junior Crystal Briscoe, continue to get it done for Houston. As a crew, the Houston hurlers have a 2.20 ERA, giving up 96 earned runs off 230 hits.
Shamblin leads the Cougars in wins (9), innings pitched (93.1) and strikeouts (62), while Love has produced the lowest ERA at 1.59 in 79 innings.
Houston and USF take to the field in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. with a single game to follow on Sunday afternoon also with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
