HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team received some well deserved recognition this week as the 12-8 Cougars broke into the national rankings with their highest ranking in three years, coming in at No. 70 in the country.
Houston last made an appearance in the ITA rankings during last season's campaign, spending two weeks at No. 75. This year's ranking is the highest since the Cougars were No. 64 back in the 2002 season.
Under first year head coach John Severance, the Cougars have played one of the toughest schedules in the program's history. In fact, Houston is 1-8 on the season against teams in the ITA rankings, with the Cougars downing No. 60 Texas Tech, 5-2, and not dropping a match to an unranked team this season.
The Cougars are now the fourth highest ranked school in Conference USA, a conference well respected for its tennis talent.
Houston comes in ahead of No. 75 Louisville, but behind No. 56 USF, No. 19 TCU and No. 15 Tulane.
Severance and the Cougars close out the regular season with a trio of matches this weekend at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts as UTEP comes to play on Friday at noon, and the No. 70 Cougars host Sam Houston and Lamar on Sunday.
