HOUSTON, Texas - Despite severe winds that came with a spring cold front, the University of Houston concluded the second week of its spring football drills with a two-hour workout on the UH practice fields.
The day's practice was capped by a controlled scrimmage that lasted almost an hour-and-a-half. Under controlled conditions the Cougars battled one another with both the first and second-string units seeing plenty of action. Even with the winds, the Cougar passing attack was able to move the ball against the defense, with three of the four touchdowns coming through the air.
Backup quarterback Jordan Brown hooked up with Ricky Wilson on a 25-yard score, and running back Ryan Gilbert also found Wilson on a halfback pass from 31 yards out. Starting signal-caller Kevin Kolb capped the afternoon's scoring with a 58-yard strike to his favorite target of a year ago, Second-Team, All-Conference USA performer Vincent Marshall.
The final score on the afternoon was the first touchdown on the day, as Harold Taylor bobbed and weaved through the UH defense for a dazzling 70-yard score, making at least six of his defensive teammates miss in the process.
Even with the windy weather conditions, UH head coach Art Briles liked what he saw from his squad.
"We tried to come out and play around a little big. We had a really quick whistle," said Briles. "We didn't cut (block) and we didn't crack (block), so it was pretty restrained scrimmage. But, we had plenty of good work on both sides of the ball (with) three pretty good practices earlier in the week, so it was a pretty good week.
"We feel like we're on pace to represent ourselves and the University of Houston as a Division I football team should be, because we have guys that are determined, serious and driven to prove themselves as winners."
After taking the weekend off the Cougars will return to the field on Monday, April 4, at 4 pm to officially start the third week of spring drills. The annual Red-White game is slated for Saturday, April 16, at 1 pm at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
