HOUSTON - Senior Kristen Glowacz continued her onslaught of the Cougar record books on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic with Houston's wins over No. 16 Nebraska and Third Ward foe TSU.
In all, Glowacz set or tied five school records on the day. She set a new Houston career record for most runs scored and hit back-to-back-to-back homeruns against the Huskers to set a new record for most homers by a single individual in a game.
She also tied the school record for most homeruns in a career, most RBI in a career, and helped the Cougars tie the school record for most team homeruns in a single game.
On the day, Glowacz was 6-for-6 with six runs, six RBI, and four homeruns.
In the Classic, the first game of the day saw UTSA down Western Michigan 11-4 before Houston dropped the Huskers 6-2 for the second time in the tournament and run-ruled TSU in a 15-1 five-inning victory.
Against the Huskers, Nebraska's Anne Steffan walked to start the ballgame and quickly advanced to third off a stolen base and a sacrifice hit. She then teamed up with Sheena Lawrick to pull off a double steal that plated Steffan and gave the Huskers an early 1-0 lead.
Houston tied up the score at one apiece when Glowacz stepped up to the plate and belted a solo shot out of the park in the bottom of the second. Then two innings later and leading off the inning, Glowacz blasted her second homer of the game, this time sending the ball over the right centerfield wall. With the two solo shots in the game, Glowacz moved into a tie for the all-time career runs top spot with 124 runs in her time at Houston.
Following Glowacz in the inning was senior Jeanie Davis who smacked a solo shot of her own over the left field wall to give Houston a 2-1 lead with no outs.
The Cougars' Brandi Clark hit a double later in the same inning that drove in senior Michelle Keith from second to give the Cougars three runs in the inning and a 4-1 lead in the game.
Glowacz wasn't finished with the Huskers, her next at-bat in the fifth inning saw her blast her third straight homerun, this time driving in a run and setting a new school record for most runs in a career with 125.
Despite Nebraska scoring a solo shot in the sixth, Glowacz' back-to-back-to-back performance and the Cougars' defense proved to be too much as Houston completed a two-game sweep of the No. 16 Huskers with the 6-2 win.
Freshman pitcher Angel Shamblin (5-2) picked up the win for Houston, throwing a complete game on five hits with two runs and six strikeouts.
Playing TSU in the final game of the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic, Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off of runs by Nesloney and Clark and followed up with a two-run homer by Daniels.
In the third, with Glowacz and Davis on base, Keith fired out a three-run dinger to push the Houston lead to 7-0.
Houston surrendered a run to the Tigers in the top of the fourth, but quickly responded with four of the next five batters, including three straight batters, mailing out solo shots to begin the bottom of the fourth.
The fourth inning scoring borage began when Nesloney led off with a homerun, Clark flew out, then Shamblin hit her first career homer, Glowacz hit her fourth of the day and first of the game, and Davis blasted her third of the day and second of the game to put Houston up 11-1 with just one out.
The Cougars strung together some more hits before the inning was out to go up 15-1 on their Third Ward counterpart. Houston easily cruised to the win in the top of the fifth and improved its season record to 13-10.
Combined, three Cougars, Glowacz, Nesloney and Davis, were perfect at the plate against the Tigers, while sophomore Carla Kennimer (4-2) picked up the win in a two-hit-one-run performance with three strikeouts.
With the tournament portion of the schedule now behind them, the Cougars host a two-game series with Texas A&M on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Cougar Softball Field, beginning at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
