GREENVILLE, N.C. - Grand slams in both games of the twin bill in Greenville, N.C., lifted the ECU Pirates over the Cougar softball team by scores of 7-4 and 5-3 on Friday.
The Cougars have dropped five straight games, the longest streak of the season, after sweeping Charlotte in their C-USA opener. Houston now stands at 18-17 on the year and 3-5 in league play.
In Game 1 with Skender at bat and runners on the corners in the first inning, Shamblin and Glowacz pulled off a double steal with two outs that scored Shamblin from third and placed Glowacz safely at second. Skender then blasted a double to left center that drove in Glowacz for an early 2-0 lead.
The second inning began with the Pirates picking up two quick outs off of a double play, but back-to-back walks placed Brooke Johnson in scoring position at second and Kim Nesloney on first.
Freshman Dru Daniels hit a deep single up the middle that scored Johnson and placed runners on the corners. Another ECU walk and Houston had bases loaded with Glowacz back at bat. The senior All-Region player singled up the middle, scoring Nesloney, and giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead after two.
The third inning saw the Pirates tie up the score with two outs and bases loaded when ECU's Kate Manuse took a full-count pitch an sent it over the right centerfield wall, evening up the score at four all.
However, the Pirates added three more in the next inning and didn't look back as they held on to take Game 1 of the twin bill by a score of 7-4.
Game 2 saw the Cougars fall behind 5-0 off a grand slam by the Pirates' Mandi Nichols and an RBI single by Ashley Quick in the first inning.
Houston responded in the third when Shamblin blasted her fourth homer of the season, putting this one over the ECU left field fence and driving in Johnson and Nesloney who had reached on a walk and a single, respectively.
ECU threatened to add to its lead in the fourth, but with one out in the inning, senior Jeanie Davis turned a double play by tagging a runner and throwing out the batter to get Houston out of the jam without a run being scored. However, neither team would score again as the Pirates won out 5-3 to finish Game 2.
The two teams square off again tomorrow, in Greenville in the final game of their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for an 11 a.m. throw.
