One game after scoring their most points of the year in a 45-point win over St. Louis, the University of Houston women's basketball team put another good offensive and defensive game together in defeating Memphis, 74-45, Monday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Lady Cougars started off slow, and the game was tied at eight with 12:35 left to play in the first half. Houston outscored the Tigers 28-8 the rest of the half to go into halftime with a 20-point lead.
Kiki Harris put Houston up for good with lay-up off a pass from Sancho Lyttle. Houston's lead would hit double-figures off a lay-up by Daphne Andre, and after back-to-back three-pointers by Kadi Creel and Andre, the lead grew to 16 at 28-12.
The second half saw more of the same from the Lady Cougars, who opened the half on a 14-2 run. Houston gained its largest advantage at 50-18, with an Emily Fryters jumper. The lead would remain around the 30-point mark for most of the half.
Memphis closed the gap to 22 off a 3-pointer by Jessica Hall with 3:39 left in the game, but the Lady Cougars closed the game by outscoring the Tigers 11-3 to make the final margin 29, 74-45.
Lyttle's 13 points and six rebounds led Houston in only 23 minutes of action. Creel scored 11 points, Andre chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds and Fryters added nine points, all coming off the bench. Houston's bench outscored Memphis' bench 43-17 in the game.
Houston forced Memphis into 27 turnovers and converted them into 28 points. The Lady Cougars also had a 30-14 edge in the paint and held an 18-9 advantage in second chance points. Houston held the Tigers to 30 percent shooting in the game.
With the win, Houston improves to 17-5 and 7-2 in Conference USA with games on Friday at DePaul and Sunday at Marquette. Houston will return home on Friday, Feb. 18 with a television game against East Carolina.
