AUSTIN, Texas - Opening the 2005 season on the road in Austin, the Cougar softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with No. 6 Texas on Saturday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Playing in 54-degree weather, the Cougars struggled to heat up at the plate, recording two hits for both games on the way to 4-0 and 6-0 losses.
It also marked the first time since April of last season that the Cougars have dropped back-to-back games in shutout fashion. The last time came against Conference USA rival USF when Houston fell 3-0 and 2-0 to the Bulls on April 9 and 10.
"To become a College World Series team you have to play the best teams," said Houston head coach Kyla Holas. "I don't believe that our performance today is a true indication of how good we really are."
The bright spots on the day for Houston was the play of junior left fielder Brooke Johnson who recorded six outs with her diving acrobatics and hits by seniors Kim Nesloney and Kristen Glowacz which broke up the Longhorns' no-hitter campaigns.
"Kim and Kristen did good for us to get a hit and get on base to break up (Texas') no-hitters," said Holas. "I expect that tomorrow our seniors will provide us with some more offense and that our pitching will come around."
Houston struggled to connect with All-American and Team USA member junior Cat Osterman's pitches as 15 Cougars were retired in the first game by the Longhorn pitcher. Houston's Nesloney recorded the lone hit in Game 1 for Houston.
The Cougars lost more then just the first game against Texas, freshman catcher Christa Raley suffered a dislocated elbow in the second inning while chasing down a foul ball.
Junior Crystal Briscoe threw a complete game, surrendering four runs on seven hits with one strikeout in six innings of work.
In Game 2, the Cougars pitted sophomore Carla Kennimer against Texas freshman Megan Denny. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Denny won out with 16 strikeouts, one hit and no runs.
Kennimer turned in three-and-two-thirds innings of work, gave up five runs on six hits, while freshman Barbie Love stepped in for the remaining two-and-one-third innings to register one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Houston second hit of the day came late in the seventh inning when Glowacz came through with a double to right field that once again ended the Longhorn's no-hitter bid.
The Longhorns and Cougars hit the field again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
