HOUSTON - Sophomore Carla Kennimer made history Sunday morning at the Cougar Softball Field, the southpaw recorded the first back-to-back no hitter by a Cougar pitcher in Houston's 5-0 win over Buffalo in the final day of the Marriott Hobby Airport Invitational.
Houston also defeated Northern Illinois 7-2 Sunday morning to go 5-0 in the three-day invitational and improved to 8-9 on the season.
For Kennimer, it was her second straight no-hitter and came just two days after logging her first career no-hitter against Northern Illinois on Friday night in a 5-0 Houston win.
While Kennimer was the hero of the first game, it was senior Kristen Glowacz' grand-slam heroics in the fifth inning against Northern Illinois that sparked Houston to the 7-2 win.
Facing Buffalo for the second time in the Invitational, the Cougars started off the game with three consecutive bunts that loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first.
Senior Michelle Keith came to bat one out later and blasted a three-run double to clear the bases and give the Coogs a 3-0 lead to start the ballgame. Houston then added on to the lead in the third with a single to right field by sophomore Jamie Adams that plated Glowacz for a 4-0 lead.
It was Glowacz who scored the final run of the game in the fifth after reaching base on a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch, reaching third after tagging up on an outfield fly, and finally reaching home on a second wild pitch.
Kennimer secured her record setting no-hitter by striking out the first two Bulls' batter of the seventh and then forcing the third batter to foul out. In all, Kennimer recorded seven strikeouts while walking two in seven innings of work.
Houston then played Northern Illinois in the next game of the day, a game that was scheduled for Saturday but was moved due to rain.
Down 1-0 in the fifth inning, Glowacz' bomb ignited the Houston offense to a seven-run inning. After the grand slam, the Cougars wasted no time placing runners in scoring position.
Houston loaded the bases again before the inning was over and a triple by junior Jaci Gonzalez cleared the bases, sealing the Cougars' victory at 7-1 before the Huskies scored a run in the seventh before the game was over.
The Cougars host the final of their four tournament at Cougar Softball Field beginning next week, Friday through Sunday, March 3-5.
