HOUSTON - After being shutout in their opening game of the second annual Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic, the Cougars roared to life with a 12-2 five-inning-run-rule victory to close out the Friday night.
Houston fell to heavy-hitting Texas-San Antonio in a 3-0 loss before downing Texas Southern to improve the Cougars' record to 9-10.
Other action on the day saw No. 16 Nebraska defeat Western Michigan and TSU by scores of 8-2 and 12-4, respectively, after which Western Michigan fell to UTSA by a score of 8-0.
Senior Kim Nesloney went 3-for-3 at the plate against the Tigers, falling a homerun short of the cycle, while scoring three of the Cougars' 12 runs in the game.
Other Cougars who came to life against TSU were senior Kristen Glowacz and freshman Jennifer Walsh. Glowacz went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while Walsh notched a hit in her first career at-bat and scored two runs for the home team.
In the first game for Houston the Cougars bats were cold. The team tallied three hits and no runs against the team they now hold a 5-3 all-time record against.
The Roadrunners scored first in the ballgame, plating two runs in the top of the third when UTSA's Jenny Garcia singled to right field driving in the runner at third and allowing the runner at second to score on the throw to first.
Down 3-0 in the top of the fourth, UTSA placed runner Krystal Guevara in scoring position after a sacrifice bunt advanced her to second. However, a diving catch by Houston right fielder Brandi Clark and a fly-out to left fielder Brooke Johnson ended the inning with no further runs.
The Cougars put together a seventh-inning rally by placing runners on first and second but couldn't bring in any run as the team fell 3-0 to UTSA.
Houston wasted no time to bounce back from the loss, the next game pitted Houston against Third-Ward foe Texas Southern, and the Cougars won out 12-2 in five innings.
With Houston assigned to be the designated visiting team in the game, the Cougars ripped off two runs in the first beginning with a Nesloney triple in the lead-off spot, setting up a Glowacz RBI single to right field.
Two batters later, freshman Angel Shamblin hit her own RBI single, this one into left field bringing home Glowacz.
The second inning began with the bases loaded on three consecutive batters allowing Glowacz to pop a sacrifice fly into right field that plated freshman Courtney Spittler. Senior Jenilee Skender took advantage of the two-on situation and dropped a double into the left-center gap that cleared the bases.
With Walsh pinch running for Skender at second, Shamblin knocked in the shortstop for the fourth run of the inning.
The sixth inning held more of the same for Houston where Glowacz led off with a solo homerun ball, Walsh again pinch ran for Skender after her second double, and Walsh scored after a sacrifice fly by senior Michelle Keith.
Houston later loaded up the bases and the Tigers walked Nesloney bringing in Shamblin from third and keeping the bases full. Freshman Dru Daniels then nailed a bases-clearing double into left center and gave Houston a commanding 12-0 lead.
Houston went on to win 12-2 after the fifth inning.
Day 2 of the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic begins at 10 a.m. with UTSA and Nebraska, followed by Nebraska and Houston at noon, before the Houston Western Michigan matchup, and concludes with TSU and UTSA at 4 p.m. and Western Michigan and TSU at 6 p.m.
