Tennis Ready for Final Fall Tune-Up

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team will finish the Fall schedule this weekend at the 2005 Seminole Classic on the Florida State campus. Tournament action will begin on Friday morning and conclude Sunday afternoon.
Along with Houston and host Florida State, some of the most competitive and highly ranked programs from around the Southeast will compete. Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Georgia Tech, USF, UAB, Troy, Stetson and South Carolina State round out the tournament field.
"There is no doubt that there is some strong competition at this tournament," head coach John Severance said. "We're looking forward to it and we're up for the challenge."
There are seven singles flights and three doubles flights. Doubles action will kick off the tournament each day at 9am with singles play to follow.
In Flight #1 Singles, Brianna Bateup will square off with C-USA foe Nischa Maier-Knapp of UAB. Sonja Nikolic matches up with Liz Cruz of USF in Flight #2 Singles.
Two Cougars are on opposite sides of the draw in Flight #3 Singles. Kami Miller hooks up with Marin Levin of Stetson, while Yolandi Terblanche takes on Milana Borisev of South Carolina State.
All four singles matches above begin at 11:30am.
Vicky Simpson, Tiffany McLoughlin and Sarah Reimer face off against Sunshine State opponents in their opening round matches. Simpson plays against Tapiwa Marobela of Florida State in Flight #4 singles at 12:45pm. McLoughlin squares off against Kiara Powell of Bethune-Cookman in Flight #6 Singles, while Reimer matches up Daenetta Thompson of Florida A&M in Flight #7 Singles. Those matches begin at 1:45pm.
In doubles action, Miller and Terblance will represent the Cougars in Flight #1 Doubles, while Bateup and Simpson will play in Flight #2 Doubles.
"Any momentum is good to carry over to the Spring season," Severance said. "I would like for us to compete strong this weekend. It's time for us to see how we stack up against top nationally ranked teams."
