DALLAS, Texas - The University of Houston soccer team allowed an own goal in the 72nd minute, allowing SMU to win its fifth-straight match, 2-1, Friday night at Wescott Field.
The own goal occurred as the Cougar defenders were trying to clear the ball out of the defensive third of the field. UH (6-4-1, 1-2 C-USA) lost its second-straight match and fell to 0-6 all time against the Mustangs.
SMU (8-3-1, 3-0 C-USA) held UH to season lows of six shots and four shots on goal. Three of UH's four losses have been by a one-goal margin.
SMU got on the board first as Kimber Bailey knocked in a one-timer off a free kick from her twin sister Krystal Bailey at the 16:41 mark of the game.
The Cougars knotted the contest at one when senior Kristin Bay (Flint, Texas/Robert E. Lee HS) headed home her seventh goal of the season off a corner kick by sophomore Jessica Green (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS/Texas A&M).
Bay's season goal tally ranks tied for eighth-best in the Cougar annals. The assist was Green's third on the campaign, moving her into a four-way tie for the team lead.
Senior Stephanie Pucek (Alvin, Texas/Alvin HS) made four saves as the Mustangs peppered her with 15 shots, but lost her second-straight contest, dropping her record to 1-4-0.
UH closes out its two-match road swing Sunday with the program's first-ever match against Tulsa. The Cougars and Golden Hurricane (6-5-2, 1-1 C-USA) are scheduled to kick off at 1p.m. CDT in Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
