TULSA, Okla. - Freshman Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) drilled home the game-winning goal in double overtime, sending the Universty of Houston soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Tulsa in a Conference USA matchup, Sunday at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
The goal was set up by a free kick outside the box that deflected off of senior Kristin Bay (Flint, Texas/Robert E. Lee HS). The ball rolled to the feet of Gaines, who sent it to the right side of the net from 17 yards out at the 108:06 mark to give UH (7-4-1, 2-2 C-USA) its first road win of the season.
The Golden Hurricane (6-6-2, 1-2 C-USA) suffered their second home loss of the season in the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
The goal was Gaines' second of the season while the assist was Bay's fourth, moving her into sole possession of the team lead.
Tulsa had numerous opportunities to score throughout the contest. The Golden Hurricane outshot the Cougars 12-10 in regulation and tallied 10 corner kicks to just five for UH. Nine of the 10 corners came in the first half.
Senior Stephanie Pucek (Alvin, Texas/Alvin HS) played the entire game for UH. She grabbed four saves and picked up her second shutout of the season, moving her record to 2-4. Meredith Hart was in net for Tulsa. She made four saves and took the loss.
Junior transfer Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius HS/Portland State) led all players with five shots on the day. She has totaled 73 shots this season, the top single--season effort in UH history and the seventh-best career total.
The Cougars return to Houston to face cross-town rival Rice this Friday in their lone match next weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT in Rice's Track/Soccer Stadium.
